Could vein disease be causing your Restless Leg Syndrome?
Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a common problem that causes an uncontrollable urge to move your legs, most often at night resulting in disturbed sleep for you and your sleeping partner. It is a common condition, but often without a clear cause. The usual treatments include; supplements, leg wraps, and even medications such as opioids and muscle relaxers. Unfortunately, these only treat the symptoms, but not the cause. More than 30% of people who suffer from RLS also have problems in their leg veins, a condition called “Chronic Venous Insufficiency.” The leg veins become inefficient and blood pools in the legs, resulting in tired and throbbing legs with heaviness, cramps and varicose veins. Varicose veins and other vein diseases can cause constant pressure on surrounding muscles from fluid buildup in the veins. The distended veins apply pressure on the muscle all day but decompress at night. As the muscle is relaxing, it can cause twitching and other symptoms associated with Restless Leg Syndrome.
Oftentimes, a vascular cause for Restless Leg Syndrome is missed. Numerous studies have shown that more than 90% of patients treated with vein disease (venous insufficiency), that also had RLS, had complete relief from restless leg symptoms. These are patients that had been taking Restless Leg Syndrome medication for years without success. If you have RLS and signs of vein disease (which can be hidden), you should consider a complete ultrasound evaluation of your legs. Treating your veins with procedures such as Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) may help you to eliminate the need for RLS medication.
