How do lasers remove hair?
It is possible to destroy the root follicles of hair using a special laser light that safely travels past the skin and only affects the hair. Our laser uses an 808nm wavelength light to painlessly treat your unwanted hair. The laser is attracted to the pigment in your hair and bypasses the surrounding tissue. The heat from the laser destroys the hair follicle.
Step 1 – Skin Assessment
The first step is to come in for a consultation to see if you’re a good candidate for laser hair removal. Our laser treats all skin types. However, certain colors of hair do not respond to laser hair removal including grey, blonde and red. If there is a question about your ability to have laser hair removal, we will do a test patch area.
Step 2 – The Treatment
Before your treatment, you will need to shave the area and stay out of the sun. We will apply a special skin gel to your skin and then the treatment begins. Our advanced laser uses a special painting technique that makes the procedure fast and pain-free. A special cooling tip helps to make the treatment virtually pain-free and protect the skin.
Step 3 – Follow-Up
Every 4-6 weeks, you will return for a follow-up treatment. Each time an area is treated, approximately 20% of the hair will be permanently eliminated. Hair grows in stages and the only stage that the hair is connected to the root follicle is in the anagen phase. You are likely to require 6-8 treatments to completely remove all the hair.
Why do I need several treatments?
You’ll need more than one treatment because the laser only affects follicles while the hair is in anagen growing cycle. This is because the laser follows the hair to the root follicle and this is the only stage that the hair is completely connected to the root follicle. On any given day, only about 20% of your hair is in the anagen stage. After each laser session, all of your hair in the treated area will fallout (shedding). The hair in the anagen phase will be permanently eliminated and others will eventually grow back. Most patients require between 4 and 8 treatments to completely eliminate hair in treatment area. Stubborn facial hair tends require more treatments than other body parts.
