More About Liposuction

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a procedure performed to shape a person’s body. It removes stubborn unwanted fat deposits that are causing a person to have a disproportionate shape. Common areas that liposuction is performed on are; legs, stomach, hips, love handles(flanks), back and chin. It is the most effective procedure for reshaping and sculpting a body.

What kind of person is a good candidate for liposuction?

Best candidates for liposuction are generally healthy, non-smoking individuals. They want stubborn subcutaneous fat (between muscle and skin) removed and not visceral fat (beneath the muscle and around the abdominal organs). We offer complimentary consultations with our surgical team to help determine if you are a good candidate for liposuction.

Will I lose weight with the procedure?

The focus of liposuction is inches not weight. You will drop sizes as inches of fat are removed. It is a fat reduction procedure that is used to sculpt a better body shape. However, a side effect can be some weight loss.  Although it is not meant for weight loss, it can be used to jump-start a fat loss program.

What happens during the procedure? How is it performed?

Liposuction is an outpatient surgery that involves making super small (3.5 millimeter) incisions in the skin near unwanted fat deposits. A tool called a cannula is gently inserted under the skin. The cannula is attached to a suction device that will remove your fat and sculpt a sleeker shape. After the procedure, you will be placed in a recovery room where you will be monitored by one of the surgical team until you are ready to go home.

What results can I expect?

You should expect to see results immediately following the procedure. After 3 months you will achieve 85% of your results. It will take approximately 6 months for your body to completely heal from the surgery and for you to see the full extent of all the liposuction. For optimal results, it is important to follow all the post op instructions, such as, wearing a compression garment. This garment helps hold your skin in place and reduce swelling during the initial weeks of the healing process.

Is the fat permanently gone?

Yes. You have a finite number of fat cells in your body and those that were removed by liposuction are gone permanently. However, it does not mean that you can never gain weight again. If you do gain a substantial amount of weight after liposuction the remaining fats cells can still enlarge. If you gain weight after liposuction, you will most likely to see the weight distributed differently. If you were prone to gain weight in your stomach and had liposuction on it, you may now find that your breasts or buttocks enlarge more when you gain weight instead of your stomach.

How much does liposuction cost?

The costs for this procedure can vary. The amount of liposuction that the person will need and the length of time it will take to remove the fat is key to determining the price. At the liposuction consultation, we will be able to tell you exactly how much it will cost to achieve your body shaping goals.

Is there scarring after?

Initially you will see very small red scars for each of the entry points from the cannula. They will fade overtime and become unnoticeable. Dr. Lee is very conscious of scaring and attempts to carefully place the incisions in natural skin folds and creases so they will be as undetectable as possible. Medical grade creams and laser procedures can be used to help reduce the look of scars if they become an issue.
