What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are veins that have lost their valve strength and become bulging, elongated and/or thickened. The most common cause of varicose veins is reflux within the great saphenous vein located in the thigh.
Nearly one in every two adults 50 years or older develop varicose veins, which usually appear as clumps of blue or purple blood vessels near the surface of the skin in the legs or pelvis.
Varicose veins are most common among women and older adults, but obesity, long spans of standing, family health history, and hormonal changes increase the risk for developing varicose veins.
What is venous reflux?
Venous reflux is commonly called venous insufficiency. It is a medical condition describing the lessening of blood circulation in the lower extremities. It can lead to pooling in the branches of the veins primarily in the legs. In turn, the pooling become visible varicose veins just under the skin surface and can often become painful if not treated.
